Twenty-Three Month Update.

Small Fry is twenty-three months old today. If I had to describe my twenty-three month old, I would say funny, particular, and opinionated. I know that the last two adjectives are basically synonyms -- but man does he want what he wants!

Boy is he funny -- he dances, sings, and even tells his own knock-knock joke.
Small Fry: Knock knock.
Me: Who's there?
Small Fry: Penis. (Laughter follows....)
Umm...okay. He's a bit obsessed with his penis these days. He's not just funny while telling jokes -- he really is pretty funny in almost all aspects of his life. Even watching him eat is funny, as he stuffs as much food as he can fit into his mouth and then starts chewing. He loves to paint with watercolors, but only actually paints with water. We've shown him again and again how to make the actual colors appear -- and he "gets" it, but he still prefers plain old water on paper. He loves to hum the song from the Muppets and sing "On the Road Again."

He is particular, most especially about what he wears. He LOVES his "cowboy boots" to the point that we have to leave them at the farm or we would never get them off his feet. I wouldn't mind the cowboy boots so much if he wasn't obsessive about how his pants fit around his boots. If his pants ride up at all, he immediately says "Mama, fix it" and will say that over and over again until everything is just perfect. It's a bit more stressful than a clothing situation needs to be. It's not just his shoes -- he is particular from the tips of his toes to the top of his head. Oh the hats! Last week it was a handknit camo hat (in a newborn size mind you) that he wore non-stop until I hid it away forever. He looked like a Jewish hunter; I could not handle it any more. This week it's Fawn's old Alabama baseball cap. He is wearing it to nap right now -- it hasn't left his head since yesterday morning. Not for one second. He slept in it all night long. Gross. It's not just the accessories that he cares about either. He wants to wear the grubbiest clothes ALL THE TIME. I try my hardest to get him in cute clothes when warranted but sometimes it's not worth the effort.

Small Fry has an opinion about everything. From what he eats, to what book he reads. Even in the frigid single degree temperatures this week, he wouldn't wear a jacket (though he kept saying "Mama, it's freezing!"). He does not like me to sing to him at night -- "No sing Mama, no no no" or "Be so quiet Mama". But he does demand that I "rock-a-bye" him to sleep (in silence).

He is spoiled rotten after having been home with me for almost a month. Our transition back to school and away from me has been rough, but I know he'll bounce back. And, I do know he loves his teachers. Case in point, I asked him who he wanted to invite to his birthday party and his first and only response was "Dee!", his favorite teacher. Melt my heart. Speaking of birthdays, we are planning a Mickey Mouse soiree to celebrate Small Fry. He loves him some Mickey -- and really loves some Pluto.

He will sit and read for long periods of time now. He's learning words in some of our regular books and will say it as I turn the pages. There is hope that I'm raising another reader. He also still loves story time, especially the singing and dancing. While he likes outings like the zoo and McWane, I'm learning that this second baby of mine would much prefer to "stay at home", which he says all the time. His favorite place to play is probably our back yard with our dogs. He's turning into a homebody!

In other developments, he is eating so much better! Alleluia! It may be that I've eliminated his afternoon snack so he is STARVING at dinner time or it may just be that he's more agreeable and adventurous when it comes to food, but I'll take it. He is still not a huge meat/protein fan and has already learned that his big brother will happily eat that part of his meal. "Bubby eat it." Those stinkers! He's still not a consistent sleeper -- waking up in the middle of the night at least once a week. We are all crossing our fingers that he will wean easily in the next few weeks. I have mixed feelings, but it is time. He asked for "Mommy milk" in the middle of Christmas Eve church. Speaking of talking, he's talking up a storm, and Fawn can always decipher what he's saying even when Buck and I cannot. And he and Fawn are playing awesome together. They love to role play -- secret spies, going camping, going hunting, Transformers.  They would much rather be together than apart and for that I am so thankful. When we found out Small Fry was a boy, one of my first thoughts was "brothers!" I'm just so excited for them that they will have each other and I hope as parents we can do a good job of fostering that relationship.

Our little nugget, you are growing up. We love you so!

iPhone Catch-Up.

Buck did a little decorating at the farm. He put a roof over the deck (HUGE improvement -- I love it and am so thankful to be married to a handy man). Plus, notice the "Mini Lodge" sign. Pinterest would be proud.
Our elf was a bit mischievous. Here he is going to the bathroom on our kitchen counter.
He also apparently has a preference for Coors Light.
Small Fry helped Uncle Ben open his 30 birthday presents for his 30th birthday from Mimi.
Fawn was out of school and got to join us for the Christmas story time at Emmet O'Neal.
He got to meet Mrs. Claus after story time.
We had some pretty mild weather before Christmas and got to enjoy Overton Park.
Type A flu. Yuck. That is all.
Playdough fun. He made a big buck.
Santa delivered a camo hat that's a bit too small.
Fawn and Buck carved Fawn's nickname into a shooting house at the farm. (I could opine on the great example Buck is setting, but it's just too cute.)

Nature Learning.

Fawn is not yet five years old and already knows more about animals than I did before I started dating his dad. No joke. I love it -- and couldn't be prouder. Yes, they are hunting these animals, but I truly am so happy about his awe for nature. Our last few months have seen the following.

Rattlesnake. They killed several this summer. Eek. Now as we drive the farm roads, Fawn points out to me where he and Buck saw and or killed big snakes. (Snakes are my least favorite of all of God's creation; I am bracing myself for summer weekends at the farm.) Buck cut off the rattle and gave it to Fawn. Double eek.

I am fully aware that the only animal in this picture is Fawn, but it is too cute to not include. His very first dove hunt with our friends the Butlers.

He's a good bird dog. That's a dove.

Fish I can't identify. Will have to get Buck to edit the blog.

Ditto.

First deer with Buck -- a doe. It got him hooked on deer hunting. He wakes up at the crack of dawn -- before Buck and his alarm -- to get Buck up for deer hunting.

Pig hunt.

First ever duck hunt.

He was one proud duck hunter.

Duck hunt part two -- several days later.

Even Small Fry is proud.

My hunting men.

Buck got a buck (on the same day as those five ducks!),

We don't shoot these armadillos. They sure are nasty!

2013 Reading Recap.

Spending at least one morning a week at the library has done wonders for my reading (and Buck's too). Once again I flew through books this year, reading the following: The Properties of Water by Ann Hood; The Greatest Gift by Ann Voskamp; Secrets of a Shoe Addict by Beth Harbison; Dear Lucy by Julie Sarkissian; The Weird Sisters by Eleanor Brown; Shepherding a Child's Heart by Tedd Tripp; Larger Than Life by Adele Parks; Shoe Addicts Anonymous by Beth Harbison; Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker by Jennifer Chiaverini; Calling Me Home by Jennifer Kibler; Family Pictures by Jane Green; Miss Dreamsville and the Collier County Women's Literary Society by Amy Hill Hearth; Always Something There to Remind Me by Beth Harbison; Beautiful People by Wendy Holden; When In Doubt, Add Butter by Beth Harbison; Wish You Were Here by Jen Lancaster; The Chaperone by Laura Moriarty; With or Without You by Carole Matthews; The Discipline of Surrender by Douglas Webster; Here I Go Again by Jen Lancaster; Good Christian Bitches by Kim Gatlin; Three Good Things by Wendy Francis; Piece of My Heart by Jane Green; Marrying Up by Wendy Holden; One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp; Bloom by Kelle Hampton; The Gatecrasher by Madeline Wickham; Kisses from Katie by Katie Davis; Carry On Warrior by Glennon Doyle Melton

My favorites were (in no particular order): Kisses from Katie, which is written by a young missionary in Africa and encourages the reader to say "yes" to God; One Thousand Gifts, which is a lesson in gratitude and seeking joy; The Greatest Gift, which is a Jesse's Tree Advent devotional; Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker, which chronicles the life of former slave turned dressmaker to Mrs. Lincoln; and The Chaperone, which is based in the early twentieth century New York and follows the travels of a young performer and her chaperone from middle America.

Happy Reading in 2014!

Christmas Day.

After our Christmas morning as a four-some, we headed out for visits to both families. We started with my parents where the boys received Transformers Construct Bots (Fawn) and tools (Small Fry) from my parents and precious Christmas train music boxes from my grandparents.

We let them stay in their pj's all day. They looked cute and were comfy.

Fawn was really into the music box. In fact, both boys loved winding and opening them. They are really cute and I'm hoping it's something we can keep working and pass down to their families.

Bumblebee Construct Bot. Love this excited face!

Optimus Prime and Megatron too.

Pops started on construction duty.

Small Fry received this jackhammer and a toolbox filled with toy tools. He had been trying to snatch Fawn's tools for most of December so it was a well-timed gift.

Fawn was happy to help Mimi open her presents from us.

Small Fry was happy to jackhammer on Mimi's leg.

Fawn and I continued our work on Optimus Prime.

Very funny toy.

Family shot.

Take two hundred.

After a nice, relaxed visit at Mimi and Pops' house, we headed to Buck's parents' house. It was our first Christmas in both sets of parents new houses and it was nice to make memories in their new homes. Fawn was thrilled to open Imaginext Dinos and Small Fry loved his Legos. We had a great time visiting with Lulu and Doc and Buck's siblings, and Small Fry was thrilled to eat his body weight in Sister Shubert rolls ("'nother biscuit?").

What boy doesn't love a dino that shoots a weapon?

Jake and the Neverland Pirates legos!

Another dino so they can battle.

Choo choo train Legos.

After some down time and toy time at home, we opened our house up for any family members who wanted to see the boys more or wanted some food. Buck made his famous turkey chili -- it is distinct and divine. We also served some appetizers and our spread of Christmas cookies. Fawn did a BB gun demonstration for Buck's parents and sister. We hadn't seen my brother and his wife yet and loved that they could drop by. We were especially thrilled that Uncle Ben was around for lego construction since they gave Fawn a pretty complicated Power Rangers lego set.

I don't know who is more excited.

Small Fry realized that his Jake Lego set included a canon and bullet.

A mess.

 Making progress.

I love this picture of my sweet Mom and Small Fry. He adores her.

Sweet, sweet nugget.

Fun cuddles.

Christmas joy.
